For some people, including me, reading books in digital format is more good than harm. We don't need to bring physical books that sometimes quite heavy. In digital world, we just need to download copies of the books and save it into internal memory of our ebook-reader, either kindle, kobo or whatever device you have. But you may say that the experience of reading physical and digital books is different. No sound of turning papers, no flipping, etc.

I couldn't deny that opinion. However, digitalized format also have its own advantages, beside of not making your arms exhausted. The ultimate advantage is the flexibility in using whatever fonts we want! Yes, we cannot change the font of printed books, can we? But in a digital world, everything is adjustable right?

In this blog I want to share some tips to use custom fonts particularly in a kindle, since I only have this device as e-reader. One most important tool that you need to install first is calibre, an electronic books management software. You can just google it and download the software. You can continue reading following passages after you have successfully installed it.

I assume that you already installed calibre. Thus, the next step is obviously to download the custom fonts we need. These fonts can be retrieved from google website: fonts.google.com (thanks google!). You can download all of the fonts available, but I recommend to just pick up some that you think lovely ones!

If you ask me, my favorite font is 'balsamiq sans' created by Michael Angeles (https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Balsamiq+Sans?query=bals). I don't have any specific reasons other than that the font is really well looking on my kindle. The font is easy to read, and that kind of fat-shape font absolutely indulges my old eyes.

The thing that you need to do is just click the button "download family" located on the top right of the website. After that, you can extract the font and start to connect your kindle to your computer. Copy the downloaded fonts into a folder called...yes, your guess is correct, "fonts"

The next procedure is to convert any ebooks you want to read into a AZW3 format. It is an important step as you cannot change the font if you use format other than AZW3 (i.e. mobi format can only use default fonts given by kindle). Don't worry, you can use the calibre to do the conversion by clicking button "convert book". On the top right menu, you can select the AZW3 format and then proceed to the conversion process. After the job done, just find the converted ebooks and copy them into folder called "document" in your kindle.

When you start the kindle, you will find these books you copied. Changing fonts on kindle can be done using theme menu on the top. Enjoy your reading! ðŸ“š
